Scottish highlands

Scotland &

Europe

Ancient castle battlements above historic cities, single malts distilled on a wind-swept Atlantic island, and a steam train crossing a viaduct best known by Hollywood wizards, desolate yet beautiful highlands, small fishing towns and large metropolitan cities  — Scotland doesn’t reveal itself to people in a hurry.

WHY scotland & Europe?

I was born here.

It chose me before I chose it.

I didn’t discover Scotland as a traveler; I was born there. Each time I visit, it feels like home.

There’s Glasgow, Edinburgh Castle, the whisky distilleries of Islay, the Jacobite crossing at Glenfinnan, the historic and beautiful highlands. I’ve learned what makes these places matter beyond the crowded tourist sites.

Beyond Scotland, there are endless European opportunities, from the backstreets of Madrid to the canals of Amsterdam and the ramparts and Mediterranean views of Barcelona’s Castell de Montjuïc.

I’m constantly looking for the unique off-the-beaten path experience to enjoy and share with you. And hopefully, your trip will benefit from following someone who has more than a guidebook to go by.

WHAT TO DO HERE

Experiences worth planning around

Whisky & Distilleries

Scotland produces the finest Scotch whisky on earth — and the best way to understand it is to visit where it’s made. Islay alone has nine distilleries on one small island, each producing something completely distinct.

History & Castles

Edinburgh Castle, Stirling, Eilean Donan — Scotland wears its history visibly in a way few countries do. The stories embedded in these walls go back centuries and they’re still alive in the people who live alongside them. Walk slowly and ask questions.

Scenic Journeys

The Jacobite steam train crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct is one of the most dramatic rail journeys in the world. Scotland’s train network connects cities, coastlines, and Highland landscapes in ways that reward the traveler who deliberately chooses slow and easy travel.

European City Breaks

Madrid, Amsterdam, and beyond — European cities reward travelers who arrive with curiosity rather than a checklist. A royal palace, a ghost tour, an e-bike, a winery district experience. The best days abroad rarely go according to plan.

DEREK’S TAKE · scotland & Europe

People come to Edinburgh and see the castle, walk the Royal Mile, and leave thinking they’ve seen Scotland. But they’ve only peeked through the front door.

Behind that lies the real country: the distilleries on Islay, the Moores of the Highlands, the steam train crossing Glenfinnan, the unspoiled vistas that go on for miles — that’s a different conversation entirely.
