The person behind the stories
Hello, I’m

who i am
This isn’t a travel website.
It’s a point of view.
I’ve been to the places I write about. I shoot my pwn photography, produce my own videos, and share the ups and downs of every trip: what worked, what didn’t, what I’d do differently, and what made it worth going.
Atlantic Destinations exists for travelers over 50 who are done being talked down to by travel brands that think “senior-friendly” is a compliment.
You’re not winding down. You’re leaning in. This is where I write for you — because I am one of you.
I’m not 20 years old anymore. But I’m not done either. And I suspect, neither are you.

WHERE WE GO
How I got here
I was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Grew up in Canada — the kind of childhood that involved hockey rinks, cold winters, and a vague awareness that there was a very old country somewhere across the Atlantic that I came from.
I’ve been a journalist, a technical writer, a corporate communications director, a content strategist at two major technology companies, and somewhere in between all of that, a photographer who ran an award-winning photo business in St. Louis and Dayton.
“I didn’t choose travel writing as a career. I chose it as a way of staying curious and staying honest about what the world actually looks like when you show up and pay attention.”
Jackie and I moved to New Bern, North Carolina nearly three decades ago and never left. The coastal South became our home — which is how a Scottish-born Canadian ended up becoming one of the more authoritative voices on the Outer Banks, the Crystal Coast, and the Cape Fear region.
We lived in Nova Scotia for several years. We’ve been back to Scotland more times than I can count. I’ve stood on the Glenfinnan Viaduct watching the Jacobite emerge from Highland mist, tasted single malts on Islay that I still think about, e-biked through the vineyards outside Chinchón, and had dinner at a table for 144 in a Madrid palace. I’ve also hung gliding at Jockey’s Ridge, paddled the Black River past 2,600-year-old trees, and eaten the best chowder of my life in Tatamagouche.
Atlantic Destinations is where all of that goes. Not a bucket list. Not a greatest hits. A conversation with travelers who are still curious, still capable, and still adding destinations to the list.
Behind the scenes
About Jackie
Most of this wouldn’t exist without Jackie. She’s been the travel companion, the honest first reader, the person who tells me when something isn’t working, and the reason the Nova Scotia chowder tour involved as many stops as it did.
Jackie is an artist based in New Bern. She writes about art, creativity, and the creative life through two Substack publications — In Search of Artistic Life and a second private publication for her closest readers.
When we travel, we travel together. When the writing is done, she’s the first person who reads it.
Still leaning in.
